Simple office suite
Apache OpenOffice is a cross-platform, open-source office suite developed by the Apache Software Foundation. It supports Windows, macOS, and Linux environments and includes six modular applications: Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, and Math. These components support document creation, data processing, presentations, vector graphics, database management, and formula editing, respectively.
The suite operates using the OpenDocument Format (ODF) and integrates basic compatibility with Microsoft Office file types. Apache OpenOffice's applications function independently but share a unified framework for configuration, scripting, and extension support. Because the software is installed locally, it doesn't rely on cloud-based services or a persistent internet connection.
Apache OpenOffice uses OpenDocument Format (ODF) as its default file type. It can import and export to Microsoft Office formats. The Writer uses templates, indexing, and frames for formatted text. Calc features multiple sheets, over 300 functions, and pivot tables. Impress handles static and animated presentations with multimedia. Math renders formulas with markup syntax, and Base connects to databases using ODBC or JDBC drivers.
Open productivity
It operates on Windows (XP through 11), macOS (up to Monterey), and most Linux distributions using x86 architecture. A full installation of the suite requires about 400 MB of disk space and a minimum of 256 MB of RAM (512 MB is recommended). Large documents or spreadsheets might experience some lag. Performance is stable offline, but the software lacks hardware acceleration for visual tasks.
The interface for each application is modular, featuring a menu bar, customizable toolbars, a status bar, and dockable side panels for properties, styles, and navigation. Toolbars can be customized, and Calc and Writer have dedicated formula and formatting bars. Right-click menus are context-sensitive but don't use a ribbon-based interface. The suite supports extensions and limited scripting with OpenOffice Basic or Java. However, it lacks built-in version control or cloud features.
Simple, free, and offline
Apache OpenOffice runs as a standalone office suite supporting core document, spreadsheet, and presentation tasks across Windows, macOS, and Linux. It uses ODF natively and integrates partially with Microsoft file types. It features independent, offline applications with a standardized UI. It also supports customization and exports but lacks modern editing features, cloud sync, and advanced performance, especially under heavy loads.
